Protection
EHAHRDP offers technical, legal, psycho-social and financial support to human rights defenders facing immediate risk in their home countries. A thorough assessment of each case is made gathering information about eminent risks and most effective avenues of mitigation. This can be issuing a public statement to draw international attention on a case or in high risk cases the temporary evacuation of the defender from his/her country. Considering the prevalence of threats on HRDs in the countries of the sub-region, the protection programme has been able to assist over 100 HRDs throughout the sub-region.
- At least four (4) HRDs have so far been successfully relocated to third countries where they are safer and continuing with their human rights advocacy in different fields.
- Other HRDs have benefited from the Project’s protection programme where they receive financial assistance to cater for their housing and other basic requirements including communication until a more durable solution is found e.g. a return to their country, medium term settlement in the country of exile or third country resettlement.
- The organization further renders basic assistance in processing HRDs refugee status and other administrative procedures related to their stay in Uganda.
- EHAHRD furthermore aspires to attend to the social and psychological needs of defenders as much as possible. For example, two HRDs have so far been reunited with their families and are all in good health as they continue to carryout research on the unfolding human rights situation in their respective countries. .
- HRDs facing immediate risk to their lives have benefited from a one-time relief fund from EHAHRDP, while several other HRDs at risk across the region continue to receive professional assistance in processing their cases and ensure their safety, taking advantage of the strategic location of the Network’s Secretariat in Kampala, Uganda.
- EHAHRDP has been able to solicit emergency support for 40 Somali journalists who fled to Kenya, Djibouti and Uganda after frequent and continuously violent attacks on media houses and its staff. The limited means of the organisation will provide for a minimum monthly allowance and technical support for an initial four to six months period.
- A resource book for human rights defenders entitled “Defending Human Rights: A Resource Book for Human Rights Defenders” was published in June 2007. The book features various articles relevant for the work and better protection of human rights defenders and is to constitute a reference manual for HRDs in their human rights work. Resource Book
